Chapter History

Phi Mu installed its fourth chapter, the Delta chapter, at Sophie Newcomb College (now Tulane University) on October 22, 1906. The Delta chapter at Sophie Newcomb College was instrumental in molding Phi Mu into the national organization that it is today, initiating over 1,200 women into Phi Mu membership. In addition, the chapter authored Phi Mu’s Formal Pledging Ceremony, still performed by chapters across the national as part of Phi Mu’s ritual.

Involved on campus and in the community, Phi Mu’s Delta chapter can boast a long line of distinguished alumnae, including two Phi Mu National Presidents and two National Panhellenic Conference Chairmen. In addition, since 1916 Phi Mu has presented biannual awards at every National Convention in honor of prestigious Delta chapter members.

Currently, the archives located at the Newcomb College Center for Research on Women has eight boxes of Phi Mu memorabilia covering the history of Phi Mu on campus and their contribution to student life, showing participation in music organizations, community service, theatrical productions, athletic teams, student government positions, and honors societies.

On November 14, 2009. Phi Mu's Delta chapter was re-installed by Robin Fanning, Phi Mu's National President.  At this celebration each founding member signed the Phi Mu charter that this chapter will have forever. The Delta chapter is proud to be the oldest active Phi Mu Chapter. We are looking forward to welcoming more exceptional women who will continue Phi Mu's tradition of excellence at Tulane University.
